ALE OmniSwitch (AOS 8) configuration for security integrators BETA

A practitioner-led walkthrough of the first 90 minutes of work on a new OmniSwitch. Console connection, AAA, SSH hardening, NTP and swlog, an example VLAN scheme, port membership, LACP, Virtual Chassis with front-panel VFLs, Learned Port Security, DHCP snooping, the working and certified save workflow, and an 8-step camera-offline troubleshooting walkthrough. Animated CLI throughout. Free.

What you will learn

This course covers the work that needs to happen on an OmniSwitch the day it lands on a security network deployment. Console connection, system identity, named admin accounts, NTP, swlog, an example VLAN scheme you can adapt to whatever the customer already runs, port membership as tagged or untagged, LACP link aggregation, Virtual Chassis with front-panel VFLs, Learned Port Security, DHCP snooping, the working and certified save workflow, and the troubleshooting flow when a camera goes offline.

Every command was validated against ALE OmniSwitch AOS 8 documentation before being included. Sources include the AOS 8 Switch Management Guide, the CLI Reference Guide, the AOS 8.x Start Guide, and field examples from the consulting work.

What makes AOS different

OmniSwitch AOS has its own conventions. The course covers each one explicitly so the syntax does not surprise anyone on the first console session.

  • Single-shell CLI, no privilege-escalation step; admin rights from login.
  • One-line VLAN creation, create / name / enable in a single command.
  • Port membership model, vlan X members port Y untagged | tagged rather than mode-based access or trunk.
  • Port notation, chassis/slot/port; the first digit is the chassis ID in a Virtual Chassis.
  • Two-step save, write memory then copy working certified.
  • Front-panel VFL stacking, Virtual Chassis uses front-panel SFPs as VFLs, with the flexibility and port-budget trade-offs that come with that.
  • Learned Port Security (LPS), the AOS MAC-limiting feature on access ports.
  • Spanning-tree edge ports, spantree port 1/1 admin-edge enable plus BPDU guard.
