AXIS Camera Station Health Check
Camera Station moves work onto the camera. That is the platform's real design decision, and it means the capability of your system is set by the device estate rather than by the server. An environment can be perfectly sized and still be unable to do the thing you bought it for, because the cameras cannot.
What the Health Check covers
The layers that matter here are not the same as on a server-centric platform. Analytics run at the edge, licensing changed shape between generations, and the device estate carries far more of the outcome than it does elsewhere.
Version and licensing position
Where you sit across the Camera Station generations, what the move to Pro changed about licensing and support, and whether your current position is a decision somebody made or a place you drifted into.
Device estate and firmware
Which cameras can actually run the analytics the system depends on, firmware consistency across the estate, models past support, and the gap between what the platform offers and what your hardware can deliver.
Edge analytics dependency
Object Analytics and the search behaviour built on it are only as good as the metadata the cameras produce. Where analytics are configured, where they are not, and where results are quietly incomplete.
Recording and storage
Retention against real bitrates rather than defaults, storage performance under sustained write, failover recording, and whether the retention actually meets the obligation it was sized for.
Server and client
Sizing against camera count and concurrent client load, database health, and the resource behaviour that shows up as sluggish clients long before it shows up as an alarm.
Secure Entry, where used
The access control side: door controller configuration, credential handling, and whether access and video are genuinely integrated or simply installed alongside each other.
Network and connectivity
Traffic separation, PoE budget across the device estate, multicast where used, and the bandwidth assumptions that were made when the estate was half its current size.
Security and hardening
Device credentials, certificate handling, encrypted communication, operator privilege model, and the distance between install defaults and the published hardening guidance.
Common issues identified
The recurring pattern is a mismatch between platform capability and device capability. Analytics-driven search sold on the strength of a demonstration, running on an estate where a third of the cameras cannot produce the metadata it needs. Firmware that has drifted across successive service visits until no two sites behave alike. Retention calculated at a bitrate the scene will never actually deliver.
The other recurring one is licensing. The generational shift changed how Camera Station is licensed and supported, and a good number of environments are sitting in a position nobody chose deliberately, with an upgrade cost that has not been budgeted because nobody has worked it out.

Estates rarely land neatly on a boundary. If yours sits just past one, add to the tier below rather than paying for the one above. The rates follow the same slope as the tiers, so extending is never a worse deal than upgrading.

How the work is delivered
Screen share, supplied configuration exports, logs and documentation. Most of what a health check examines is visible without anyone travelling, and this is how the majority of engagements run.
A pre-configured unit ships to the site. Somebody on site plugs it into power and network, which takes minutes and needs no technical skill. It provides the access needed to examine the system properly, then ships back. Covers configuration, shipping both directions, and retrieval.
Cheaper and faster than travel for a single site, and it is what makes distance stop mattering. A site in another province costs the same to review as one an hour away.
Where the work genuinely requires being in the room: physical inspection, cabling and rack conditions, commissioning witness, or an environment that cannot be reached remotely. Day rate plus travel at cost, agreed in writing up front and never added afterwards.
What a health check does not include
Listed because an unstated exclusion is what turns a fixed price into an argument at invoice time, and that is the exact failure this practice exists to review other people for.
- Remediation. The report says what to fix; fixing it is a separate engagement or your own team.
- Configuration changes. Nothing is altered on a live system during a review.
- Licence, hardware or software costs, which are yours and are bought direct.
- Vendor support cases, escalations, or dealings with your integrator on your behalf.
- On-site attendance, unless added explicitly.
- Ongoing monitoring or a retainer. A health check is a point-in-time assessment.
Prices are for a AXIS Camera Station environment and are held for 30 days from quotation. Travel, where an on-site day is added, is charged at cost and agreed in writing before it is incurred.
