Network Fundamentals for Security Integrators
Three days on the network that every camera, door controller, and VMS server depends on. Addressing, VLANs, PoE budgets, multicast, switch configuration, and the troubleshooting habits that separate a working site from a ticket queue. Built from the same material as the free Network Primer, taught live with hands-on labs.
What you will be able to do
- Read an IPv4 addressing plan and build one for a site with cameras, access control, intercom, and management on separate VLANs.
- Configure access and trunk ports, a management VLAN, and inter-VLAN routing on a managed switch without copying from a forum post.
- Size PoE budgets and uplinks from the camera schedule instead of guessing.
- Trace a packet from camera to VMS and name every hop, protocol, and port in between.
- Diagnose the common site failures: duplicate IP, wrong gateway, untagged VLAN mismatch, IGMP snooping without a querier, and a PoE budget that runs out at 3 pm.
- Hand a network document to the customer’s IT department that they will accept.
Day by day
How the network carries the system
- Morning Hosts, frames, and IPv4
MAC and IP, switches and routers, ARP, DHCP, DNS, and the OSI layers as a troubleshooting map rather than an exam topic.
- Afternoon Subnetting lab
CIDR and VLSM worked by hand, then an addressing plan for a 4-building campus with 180 cameras and 60 doors.
Switches, VLANs, and PoE
- Morning Segmentation
Access and trunk ports, native VLAN mistakes, management VLAN, SVI routing, and where the firewall sits between security and corporate.
- Afternoon Switch configuration lab
A Cisco Catalyst and an Aruba switch configured from factory default to a documented security-network baseline. PoE classes, budgets, and uplink sizing from a real camera schedule.
Video traffic and troubleshooting
- Morning Multicast, unicast, and bandwidth
How a VMS pulls streams, IGMP snooping and queriers, RTSP and ONVIF ports, NTP, and the bandwidth math for recording and live view.
- Afternoon Break and fix
Six staged failures on the lab network. Teams find each one with ping, traceroute, the switch CLI, and a packet capture, then write the fix up for the customer.
Who this is for
Security integrators, installers moving into IP systems, junior techs, and IT generalists who inherited a security network.
Prerequisites. None. The free Network Primer Level 1 is a useful warm-up.
What is included
- Lab access during the course, one participant per switch
- The course workbook and the switch baseline configurations as text files
- A copy of the free Network Primer and CCTV Fundamentals courses for review afterward
- Certificate of completion with contact hours
What this is not
Not a CCNA prep course and not vendor certification. Routing protocols, wireless design, and firewall policy are mentioned where they touch the security network and otherwise left to the hardening course.

Reserve a seat
Reserving costs nothing and commits you to nothing. You get the next cohort dates for this course first, and the invoice only once the dates are confirmed. Groups of 6 or more can ask for private delivery on their own site.
